Country :: India
Page Number :: 01-13
Abrupt breakage of the taps is repeatedly come across during tapping threads, especially when tapping on difficult to machine material like titanium. In the present study, regression models and artificial neural network (ANN) were developed to predict tapping torque on titanium alloys while performing axial and, axial and torsional vibration-assisted tapping (AVAT and ATVAT). For the development of predictive models, tapping speed, axial vibration amplitude and ratio of forward-backward movement were considered as model variables in both the cases. General full factorial design of experiments was carried out in order to collect torque values and this data is input for model construction. In regression and ANN, different models and algorithms were tested for optimum predictions. The performance of the regression mathematical model and ANN model were compared with experimental outputs. The comparison indicates that the ANN model predictions are closer to the experimental outputs compared to the regression model predictions. This model can be used for predicting the tapping torque and on the basis of this breakage of taps can be avoided. The details of experimentation, model developing strategies, testing, and performance comparisons are presented in the paper.

Author Name :: Jawale Keshav Uddhavrao || Vilas Warudkar
Country :: India
Page Number :: 30-42
Walking machines are becoming more popular now a day because of their abilities of working in non-planned conditions. Because of that, these walking machines can reach nearly 75% land of the whole world which is not possible to reach by using wheeled machines. So by understanding its importance, in this research work a pantograph type walking mechanism has been designed, analysed and a prototype has been fabricated. The basic working principle of this walking mechanism is similar to that of pantograph mechanism. All its design part has been done in such a way that it can be used for designing an efficient and reliable humanoid robot whose control is easy because it is a 2-DOF walking mechanism. A standard walking trajectory has been developed which is perfect for efficient walking on normal surface and for arbitrary surface it is easy to generate modified trajectory as per requirement for that just a controlled input is required which can be generated by appropriate coordination of sensors, actuators and computational control. A scaled prototype of this pantograph type walking mechanism has been fabricated to understand different parameters like trajectory flow, friction, balancing etc. Also, a velocity and acceleration analysis of this prototype has been done. In this way the whole design, analysis and modelling of pantograph type leg mechanism for humanoid robot has been carried out.

The feasibility of using oil palm flower as a low-cost absorbent for the removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) from aqueous solution was studied. The % adsorption of the metal ions was found to be pH, initial metal concentration, contact time, adsorbent dose and temperature dependent. The optimum pH was found to be pH 5 for Pb(II) and pH 7 for Cd (II). About 97-100% removal of the metal ions was observed with an adsorbent dose range of 1-3g per 100ml of 50mg/L solution. The optimum temperature for the removal of both metal ions was found to be 40oC. The values of ΔHo and ΔGo indicated that the adsorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) onto oil palm flower was exothermic and spontaneous. The equilibrium adsorption data were better fitted to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm than the Freundlich. The maximum adsorption capacity qmax was 12.987mg/g for Pb(II) and 13.514mg/g for Cd(II). The rate of Pb(II) and Cd(II) adsorption onto oil palm flower followed the pseudo-second order kinetics. The result of the study showed that oil palm flower holds good potential as a low-cost adsorbent in the removal of heavy metals from aqueous solution.

Paper Title :: Cu-Pd Bimetallic Catalyst for Electrocatalytic Reduction of Nitrates in Water
Author Name :: Bren Mark B. Felisilda || Louis Hamenu || Jeong Ho Park || Chung Sup Yoon || Jang Myoun Ko
Country :: South Korea
Page Number :: 60-66
This paper reports the use of bimetallic catalysts, prepared via co-electrodeposition of Cu and Pd from chloride baths in 0.5 M HNO3 on Ti substrates and its catalytic effect on nitrate reduction. Electrochemical measurements were made using cyclic and linear sweep voltammetry while deposition was made via chronopotentiometry at -0.5 V vs Ag/AgCl. Scanning electron microscopy analyses revealed that the films produced by potentiostatic deposition are porous and rough, which is suitable for electrocatalysis applications. Results show that prepared electrocatalyst was able to reduce nitrates with 86.50% efficiency after 3 hours. Meanwhile, soaking the electrocatalyst in tap water over time decreases its efficiency to some extent but still capable of reducing high concentration of nitrates in water.

Paper Title :: Galvanostatic co-electrodeposition of Cu/Pd on Ti as catalyst for nitrates reduction in water
Author Name :: Bren Mark Felisilda || Kyoung Young Eum || Jin Woo Kim || Jang Myoun Ko || Changwoo Park
Country :: South Korea
Page Number :: 67-74
The galvanostatic co-electrodeposition of copper and palladium on titanium is studied using cyclic voltammetry and linear sweep voltammetry. The optimized current density and time for co-electrodeposition is found to be 7 mA/cm2 for 7200 seconds. The prepared electrocatalyst showed promising efficiency of reducing nitrates in the range of 95-98 % from an original concentration of 100 ppm. SEM images reveal the surface deposits to be amorphous with cauliflower-like structures and the EDX analysis show deposition of the Cu/Pd on the Ti substrate. The reduction efficiency of the catalyst was enhanced by 2-3% with an addition of Na2SO4 as a supporting electrolyte. Soaking the prepared electrodes in tap water for 14 weeks caused detrimental effects on its nitrate reduction efficiency.
